School Engagement at Peak Forrest Independent School and Hadfield Nursery School - Monday 20th October

Glossop SNT - School Engagement/School Input

PCSO Buller of the Glossop Youth Engagement Team (YET) attended Peak Forrest Independent School (part of First Steps Together) which is a specialist secondary school this morning, Monday 20th October. He had been invited by the school to complete an input on Halloween & Bonfire Safety with their KS3 (ages11-14) students. This school provides a bespoke academic and vocational curriculum. The school welcomes learners with SEND (speciial educational needs). Two classes were seen, today with some great engagement shown and really good questions too - well done to all.

Later this afternoon PCSO Buller then attended Hadfield Nursery School, Queen St, Hadfield after being inviited alongside his colleague PCSO Jones from Hadfield SNT to come in and chat with their children (ages 2 - 5). We talked about holding hands such as your mummy and daddy - grandma or grandad and any other relatives when walking to and from school and especially when outside. Oh and not to run off from parents. 

We mentioned Halloween and a little on Bonfire safety - with an emphasis on sparklers although children under 5 should not be given them - and should never be unsupervised - and to ensure that everyone handling them wears gloves. 

🥘  Some general Halloween/Trick or Treat safety Tips 👻
▪️Go trick-or-treating with a parent/friend or a group to ensure safety. 
▪️Make sure children are visible to drivers by choosing bright costumes, adding reflective tape, and using glow sticks or flashlights. 
▪️Stay on the footpath and walk, don't run, across the street. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing, and only cross at corners or crosswalks when possible. 
▪️Stick to familiar, well-lit areas and only visit houses with their porch lights on. 
▪️Ensure costumes are flame-resistant and fit properly to prevent trips and falls. Face paint is often a safer alternative to masks that can obstruct vision. 
▪️Only trick-or-treat at the door and do not enter any stranger's home. 
▪️Have an adult inspect all candy before it is eaten. Dispose of any unwrapped or suspicious-looking treats.

🔥  Some general bonfire safety tips if at home 🎆  - It may be a good alternative to attend an organised event in your local area 
▪️Notify neighbours of your plans
▪️Build the bonfire at least 18 meters (60 feet) away from buildings, fences, sheds, and trees. 
▪️Prepare safey equipment - keep a bucket of water, a hosepipe or a fire extighuisher nearby
▪️Ensure everyone stays a safe distance from the fire
▪️Never leave a bonfire unattended. An adult should be responsible for supervising it until it is completely out. 
▪️Never burn aerosols, tyres, canisters, or anything containing paint or foam. 
▪️Do not light fireworks near the bonfire, and never throw them onto the fire. 
▪️Keep pets indoors

After the bonfire 🔥
▪️Pour water on the embers, rather than leaving it to burn out on its own, to prevent it from reigniting.
▪️If the bonfire gets out of control, do not try to tackle it yourself. Call the emergency number immediately. 

❌ Remember it is illegal to ❌

▪️Buy fireworks under the age of 18
▪️Set off or throw fireworks in a public soace
▪️Deliberately start fires
▪️Set of fireworks between 11pm and 7 am ( exceptions are Bonfire Night, New Years Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year).
▪️Attack emergency service workers with fireworks
